That was the recipe for a quiet weekend of patrolling for Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service members, although they wasted no time getting set up for the season.
With few swimmers in the still-bracing, calm waters, members opted to spend much of the weekend upskilling and refreshing, with ATV courses operating on the Main Beach and 4WD training up to the summit of Mauao and back.
While several Mauao walkers were puzzled seeing the MMLS Nissan Navara heading up the hill, general manager Glenn Bradley explained it was an all-important scenario to recreate.
"So many of our out-of-hour call-outs are for incidents up Mauao, so knowing how to negotiate the tight bends and get people down safely is absolutely critical," Bradley said. "We've now got a solid core of senior members capable of getting up safely and quickly."
Volunteer patrols will now operate at the club every weekend until April, with regional lifeguards starting during the week in December and January.
