Mount Lifeguard Service celebrates 50 years of ‘Nippers’

As the roof nears completion on our brand new club and the first warmth of summer starts heating the water, we’re also celebrating a very special milestone in our club’s history. You can watch the full on our nippers (junior surf) programme HERE, which was first brought to New Zealand 50 years ago this month, thanks to a group of foresighted, pioneering Mount Maunganui locals. We were so lucky to be able to launch our celebrations with some of those original figures; John and Fay Burn enrolled their kids that first season in 1968 with John serving as inaugural secretary, while Shirley Youngman’s late husband Bob Mitchell was the catalyst, having brought the idea back from his native Australia. We were stoked to also have young Levon Pugh there - he’s the grandson of original nipper, the late life member Peter ‘Mussils’ Lloyd. Stay tuned for more celebrations as the season kicks off.

If you would like to make a $50 donation in celebration of 50 years of Nippers you can do so HERE
