The beach is a fantastic place for kids and we provide a junior surf programme for 5-13 year-olds, focused on fun, skill development and improving confidence in the water.
There are plenty of opportunities to get your youngster involved, with Nippers programmes running on Sunday morning and Wednesday afternoon, sports and lifeguarding squads to join and our superb school holiday programme!
Nippers - Building skills on the beach
Our Nippers programme starts in early November, running every Sunday morning from 10am –12pm, with a break over the Christmas/New Year period, and Wednesday afternoons during the school terms.
You can also register on any Sunday of the season, at 9.30am before each session begins. Registration forms are available from the Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service office.
Ocean squad - The next wave
This programme is for 10—13 year-olds, who have generally come through the Nippers programme. Trainings start in early October, from Monday to Friday 4.00-5.15pm and on Saturday from 10am-12pm. You don’t need to attend every session - pick the ones that suit!
Rookie lifeguards - In training for the big leagues
This is for 12-13 year-olds, allowing them to transition from Nippers into active lifeguards. Rookie Lifeguards go through a training programme and assist current lifeguards on patrol until they turn 14 and are old enough to sit the surf lifeguard award.
Junior surf holiday programme
Each year, we run a holiday programme for the 8 and 9 year-old junior surf members, providing six weeks of intensive coaching to build skills and keep our younger members active over the summer holidays.
